High-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions

Also known asgolden rutilated quartz (conditional name) · Titanium aura quartz (not a recommended name) · Titanium quartz (not to be used as a name)

A Chinese quality-based trade name for fairly clean quartz with golden needle-like inclusions; the “titanium” in the Chinese name does not indicate composition, and there is no unified international grading standard. Also known as golden rutilated quartz.

This page compares how the major standards and institutions name it, what must be disclosed when selling it, whether it can be worn every day, how it is treated and identified, and which source each conclusion comes from. Price, rarity and origin are outside the scope of this wiki.

Material research: formation, causes and history

What authoritative sources say about how this material forms, what causes its colour and optical effects, where its name comes from and how people have used it. Each statement carries an evidence grade and its sources; it describes the material in general, not any specific piece.

How it forms

Titanium quartz is a Chinese quality/trade name, usually claimed to be quartz with golden needle-like (rutile-type) inclusions and assigned a grade above ordinary golden-hair quartz. The name is not a mineralogical term, and neither the claimed inclusion mineral species (a 'titanium' mineral or rutile) nor the grading is settled in the available authoritative sources. Substantively it remains inclusion-bearing quartz: the quartz host grows from silica-bearing fluids in open cavities, and inclusions are trapped during growth along growth layers. The reliability of the 'titanium quartz' label therefore rests on actual testing of the inclusions in a given sample, not on the trade name.

Scope: Used to explain 'Taijing' (high-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions) as a non-standard trade name and its relation to the inclusion crystallisation mechanism of quartz; no determination is made of the mineral species of its claimed inclusions or of quality grade.

Where it forms

Open cavities or vein pockets: the same open-system crystallization setting as other inclusion-bearing quartz.

Silica-bearing hydrothermal system: quartz precipitates from fluids and captures inclusions as it grows.

Sources G&G Spring 2017 · G&G Fall 2024

How it forms, step by step

  1. Silica-bearing fluids feed quartz growth in an open cavity.

    Sources G&G Spring 2017 · G&G Fall 2024
  2. The quartz crystal grows in stages, trapping needle-like minerals or fluid inclusions during growth.

    Sources G&G Spring 2017 · G&G Fall 2024
  3. Whether the claimed 'titanium' or rutile inclusions exist must be judged by testing the individual sample.

Link to appearance

Visually it shows golden needle- or hair-like "silk" inclusions in quartz, but appearance cannot prove the inclusion mineral species or grade.

Timescale

No growth duration or absolute age is given, and no geological data specific to this trade name is available.

Supporting findings

Substantively, titanium quartz follows inclusion-bearing quartz mechanisms: the crystal grows in open cavities and traps inclusions during growth.

Evidence grade A

Scope: Describes only the generic trapping mechanism; does not guarantee the inclusions of any particular sample.

Sources G&G Fall 2024

Quartz clusters can occur in open cavities such as vesicles/vugs in mafic volcanic rocks, with crystals growing into the cavity, for example in the Deccan Trap basalts of India.

Evidence grade A

Scope: An example occurrence; the source samples are iridescent quartz, not exclusive to 'titanium quartz'.

Sources G&G Spring 2017

Other research findings

Titanium quartz is a non-standard quality/trade name commonly linked to quartz with rutile-type inclusions, but neither the inclusion mineral species nor the grading is authoritatively settled.

Evidence grade C

Scope: A naming-boundary judgement; sources describe only the 'golden rutilated quartz' trade material, without confirming the species for 'titanium quartz'.

Sources G&G Spring 2017

The claimed titanium- or rutile-bearing inclusions of 'titanium quartz' have no identification criteria in the available authoritative sources; their identity must rely on testing.

Evidence grade C

Scope: States uncertainty in composition identification; does not deny that some samples may contain rutile.

Sources G&G Spring 2017

Limits of this research

  • Research status: Formation, occurrence or other material-specific findings found in authoritative sources
  • 'Titanium quartz' is a non-standard trade name; the claimed inclusion species and grading are unsupported by authoritative sources, so these claims rest on evidence level C only.
  • No growth duration or absolute age; not a single mineral species.

Whether a treatment has to show in the name differs between the two rule sets (this site’s paraphrase):

  • GB/T 16552—2017: a method classed as treatment has to be stated in the name itself — the method put before the name, or added in brackets after it; a method classed as optimization does not need to appear in the name, though one marked “Optimization (annotation required)” still has to be noted in the quality documents. Names

For High-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions, "Titanium aura quartz" and "golden rutilated quartz" are recorded with no restriction on use as a name, while "Titanium quartz" must not be used as a name (CIBJO Gemmological Laboratories Book 2024 §7.2.1.202; 16 CFR Part 23 §23.26(a)).

Trade and mineralogical namesThe identity tier of High-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions is trade name (inclusion or effect description). Names in four languagesIt has Simplified and Traditional Chinese names; in English it is High-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions (trade name), and in Japanese a transliteration of gold rutile quartz (market name, inclusions to be confirmed). Standard and listing namesThe basic name it corresponds to in GB/T 16552—2017 Table A.1 is the name for hair-like included quartz, and the entry's own Chinese name is not listed in the GB/T 16552—2017 text; the suggested listing name is the Chinese trade name, stating quartz and the confirmed inclusions. Trade and mineralogical namesThe mineralogical name is given as quartz sold under a Chinese quality or trade name, with golden needle-like rutile inclusions often claimed, so both identity and grade need evidence. Institution usageThe wordings of GIA, FTC, CIBJO and Gem-A have not been checked; the entry's own English name carries the trade name qualifier and does not represent their position. Japanese namesThe Japanese GSJ wording has not been checked; the entry's own Japanese name is the transliteration above. Sub-names and unacceptable namesTitanium quartz is a literal translation that is not recommended, used only as a search term and registered as an unacceptable name; golden rutilated quartz needs confirmation and is matched only once the conditions are confirmed, based on this site's ruling without a supporting clause.

What it is and how it's identified

The material facts for High-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions are registered from GB/T 16553—2017 Gems — Testing; every value is written by the cited clauses for rock crystal (the whole class), not measured on High-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions separately. Chemical composition, fluorescence, spectra and other items are given in the cited clauses for rock crystal (the whole class) in the Rock crystal entry. For rock crystal (the whole class), the material is crystalline and trigonal, with hexagonal prismatic crystals showing distinct horizontal striations on the prism faces; Mohs hardness is 7 and there is no cleavage; density is 2.64–2.69 g/cm³, with a clause value of 2.66 and a stated tolerance (+0.03/−0.02), from which the limits are derived. The optical items are likewise taken for rock crystal (the whole class): refractive index 1.544–1.553, birefringence 0.009, anisotropic, uniaxial positive, possibly showing a bull's-eye interference figure. For rock crystal (the whole class), both the cat's-eye effect and asterism can be seen, the stars being six-rayed and occurring mostly in rose quartz. For rock crystal (the whole class), pleochroism in the untreated state is weak and varies with colour; the vitreous lustre is likewise registered for rock crystal (the whole class) in the untreated state.

Registered material facts

Each row carries its own source and check date and can be cited on its own; “—” means the cited source gives no value, not “none”.

Chemical composition, luminescence, UV-visible spectrum, infrared spectrum, magnification: these whole-class features are given in the cited clause for rock crystal (the whole class), so they are not repeated on the High-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions page; see the material facts on the Rock Crystal entry.

Items below that name the class they cover give the cited clause’s value for that whole class, not a measurement of High-clarity quartz with golden needle-like inclusions (how to read class-level values).
