Standing and legal force
Gem-A is a UK education charity. It traces its origin to the NAG Education Committee of 1908 and was constituted as a distinct association in 1931 — the same year GIA was founded, independently and on the other side of the Atlantic. It awards the Gemmology Diploma and Diamond Diploma, taught in seven languages across 26 countries; diploma holders who remain members may use the post-nominals FGA or DGA. Like GIA it has no statutory authority.
Scope of its naming system
Gem-A does not publish a naming standard in the sense CIBJO does. What is recorded here is its teaching-side position on how a material should be called — useful precisely because it is arrived at independently of the trade confederation (CIBJO) and of the US regulator (FTC).
