Artificial Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG)

Also known asGGG

A man-made Gd3Ga5O12 crystal with no natural gem counterpart; GB/T 16552-2017 Annex A Table A.5 lists it as "man-made gadolinium gallium garnet". This page compares how the major standards and institutions name it, what must be disclosed when selling it, whether it can be worn every day, how it is treated and identified, and which source each conclusion comes from.

Price, rarity and origin are outside the scope of this wiki.

What this page can answer

This page covers

What we cannot conclude

  • Whether one particular bead is natural, treated or synthetic — only a laboratory report can settle that.
  • Geographic origin, unless an origin report accompanies the item.
  • Price, rarity or investment value: this wiki covers naming and disclosure only.

Material research: formation, causes and history

What authoritative sources say about how this material forms, what causes its colour and optical effects, where its name comes from and how people have used it. Each statement carries an evidence grade and its sources; it describes the material in general, not any specific piece.

How it forms

Synthetic gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG, Gd3Ga5O12) is a man-made crystallised material with no known natural counterpart gem. Together with synthetic yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG), it has been used as a diamond simulant since the 1960s and can be made in a variety of colors. CIBJO names gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) next to YAG and expressly treats it as a man-made crystal for which nature offers no equivalent. GGG is therefore not a mined gemstone and is not formed in nature; its manufacture is artificial crystal growth.

Scope: Applies to explaining GGG as a man-made crystalline product with no natural counterpart, its positioning as a simulant and its naming requirements; does not apply to descriptions of natural genesis.

Where it forms

Manufacturing environment: artificial crystal growth (single-crystal Gd3Ga5O12 grown in a laboratory/factory); no natural occurrence environment applies to this record.

Sources CIBJO Gemstone Book 2022 · GIA Introduction to Imitation Gems

Not applicable to a natural occurrence environment: GGG has no known natural counterpart, and no gem-quality natural occurrence exists.

How it forms, step by step

  1. Prepare the gadolinium- and gallium-oxide feedstock in the Gd3Ga5O12 stoichiometric ratio.

Sources CIBJO Gemstone Book 2022 · GIA Introduction to Imitation Gems
  2. Grow a single crystal of gadolinium gallium garnet at high temperature by an artificial crystal-growth method.

Sources CIBJO Gemstone Book 2022 · GIA Introduction to Imitation Gems
  3. (Optional) adjust color by doping to obtain crystals of different colors.

  4. Cut and polish into finished gems or diamond imitation stones.

Link to appearance

GGG's appearance as a diamond imitation comes from its colorless, high-refraction crystal look; it can be made in a variety of colors to imitate different gems.

Sources GIA Introduction to Imitation Gems

Timescale

The source states GGG joined classic diamond simulants in the 1960s (the material's introduction era, not a geological timescale).

Other research findings

CIBJO names gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) next to yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) and expressly treats both as man-made crystals for which nature offers no equivalent.

Evidence grade A

Scope: Applies to GGG's classification as an artificial stone with no natural counterpart; not to a specific specimen.

Sources CIBJO Gemstone Book 2022

CIBJO requires the name of a man-made crystal with no natural equivalent to be accompanied by 'artificial product' or 'artificial stone', given the same emphasis and prominence as the name.

Evidence grade A

Scope: Applies to the naming and disclosure of GGG and similar artificial stones; not a value judgment.

Sources CIBJO Gemstone Book 2022

In the 1960s, gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) and its 'cousin' yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) joined classic diamond simulants such as glass, natural zircon, and colorless synthetic spinel.

Evidence grade A

Scope: Applies to the historical development of synthetic diamond simulants; not to geologic origin.

Sources GIA Introduction to Imitation Gems

Synthetic gadolinium gallium garnet is available in a variety of colors; colorless GGG is cited alongside colorless YAG among classic diamond-simulant materials.

Evidence grade A

Scope: Applies to GGG's color range and simulant use; not to a specimen's color grade.

Limits of this research

  • Research status: Only partial material-specific findings found; gaps are stated as gaps
  • The cited sources do not give the specific crystal-growth method or process parameters for GGG.
  • The sources record no per-specimen chemical composition or doping formulation for GGG.

The registered material facts for man-made Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG): composition Gd3Ga5O12, crystalline, cubic, with a massive crystal habit. Mohs hardness 6–7, cleavage none; this site notes that hardness alone is not enough to judge durability. Density 6.95–7.09 g/cm³, from the clause value 7.05 with tolerance +0.04/−0.10, from which the range is derived. Optic character isotropic, birefringence none, dispersion 0.045; refractive index 1.97–2.03, from the clause value 1.970 with tolerance +0.060, from which the range is derived. In the untreated state, pleochroism is none, body colour is usually colourless to light brown or yellow, lustre is vitreous to subadamantine, and magnification shows gas bubbles and triangular platy metallic inclusions. The UV-visible spectrum is not diagnostic, and the mid-infrared region shows the characteristic infrared absorption bands of man-made gadolinium gallium garnet.
