Xiu Yu / Serpentine

Also known asXiuyan jade (not to be used as a name)

A variety name listed under Serpentine in GB/T 16552-2017 Table A.2, made mainly of serpentine aggregate; origin and treatment must be proven separately. This page compares how the major standards and institutions name it, what must be disclosed when selling it, whether it can be worn every day, how it is treated and identified, and which source each conclusion comes from.

Price, rarity and origin are outside the scope of this wiki.

Material research: formation, causes and history

What authoritative sources say about how this material forms, what causes its colour and optical effects, where its name comes from and how people have used it. Each statement carries an evidence grade and its sources; it describes the material in general, not any specific piece.

How it forms

Xiu Yu / Serpentine is a variety name of serpentine jade whose parent is serpentine — a serpentine-group aggregate produced when olivine-rich ultramafic rocks undergo low-temperature hydration (serpentinization). Its make-up is serpentine-group hydrous phyllosilicates (ideal formula Mg3Si2O5(OH)4), commonly a compact aggregate of the three phases lizardite, chrysotile and antigorite, alternating with further minerals. Under the Chinese GB/T nomenclature Xiu Yu / Serpentine is listed under serpentine; the English ‘Xiuyan jade’ is a market name. The formation content here rests on serpentine mineral sources and does not recast the parent’s general genesis as unique to Xiu Yu / Serpentine.

Scope: Covers an overview of the formation of xiu yu (a serpentine jade variety); formation content follows that of the parent material serpentine, and the GB/T naming serves only for positioning, its full text being unavailable.

Where it forms

Olivine-rich ultramafic rocks undergoing serpentinization in a relatively low-temperature hydrous environment, forming a serpentine aggregate.

Sources G&G Spring 2016

How it forms, step by step

  1. Ultramafic rocks are emplaced.

    Sources G&G Spring 2016
  2. Low-temperature hydration alters the rock into a serpentine-group aggregate.

  3. A compact, finely coloured serpentine jade results.

Link to appearance

The colour and lustre of serpentine jade depend on the aggregate and associated minerals; appearance alone cannot prove origin, naturalness, or treatment.

Sources G&G Spring 2016

Timescale

The source states serpentinization occurs at relatively low temperature but gives no absolute age or growth duration.

Supporting findings

The parent material of Xiu Yu / Serpentine is serpentine — a serpentine-group aggregate formed by low-temperature hydration (serpentinization) of olivine-rich ultramafic rocks.

Evidence grade A

Scope: Formation rests on the parent serpentine; does not claim Xiu Yu / Serpentine has a genesis independent of serpentine.

Sources G&G Spring 2016

As a serpentine jade, Xiu Yu / Serpentine is a compact aggregate commonly consisting of the three serpentine phases (lizardite, antigorite, chrysotile) alternating with other minerals (carbonates, quartz, chlorite, brucite).

Evidence grade A

Scope: Describes the serpentine aggregate make-up; not all Xiu Yu / Serpentine samples contain all three phases.

Recorded localities

Authoritative sources list the localities below; the list is not exhaustive.

Asia

North America

Oceania

These are localities recorded by authoritative sources, not an origin finding for any individual piece. The CIBJO Gemstone Book (2022, §4.2.3) says a place of origin names where a gem was mined or harvested, is a matter of opinion, does not imply a level of quality, and that cutting, processing or exporting centres must not be used to imply origin. See how far testing can go on this page, the origin determination guide and the overview of recorded localities.

Other research findings

The mineral make-up of Xiu Yu / Serpentine (serpentine jade) is serpentine-group hydrous phyllosilicates with the ideal formula Mg3Si2O5(OH)4.

Evidence grade A

Scope: A composition fact only; no specific origin or treatment.

Sources G&G Spring 2016

Under the Chinese GB/T nomenclature, Xiu Yu / Serpentine is listed under serpentine as a variety name of serpentine jade; the formation content here is taken from serpentine mineral sources. The full GB/T 16552 text is unavailable, so the nomenclature point is for orientation only.

Evidence grade A

Scope: The full GB/T text could not be obtained, so the naming conclusion cites no specific clause of it.

Limits of this research

  • Research status: Formation, occurrence or other material-specific findings found in authoritative sources
  • Xiu Yu / Serpentine is a variety name of serpentine jade, not an independent species; formation rests on the parent serpentine.
  • The full text of GB/T 16552 could not be obtained, so no specific clause of it is cited here.
  • The English 'Xiuyan jade' is a market name, a search term only.
  • No absolute age or growth duration is given.

  • GB/T 16552—2017: a method classed as treatment has to be stated in the name itself — the method put before the name, or added in brackets after it; a method classed as optimization does not need to appear in the name, though one marked “Optimization (annotation required)” still has to be noted in the quality documents. Treatments listed by standards

Xiu Yu / Serpentine applies the “Serpentine” row of GB/T 16552—2017 Annex B, Table B.1, which lists filling and dyeing: the filling grades are on the Gem treatments page, and dyeing is in the treatment category. The notes to Table B.1 and the definitions of the filling grades are on the Gem treatments page, and the full row, with the effect column, is on the Serpentine page.

What it is and how it's identified

Among the registered material facts for Xiu Yu / Serpentine, the durability item gives a Mohs hardness of 2.5–6 for the serpentine mineral group as a whole, from GB/T 16553—2017 Gems — Testing. Site note: a Mohs hardness of 2.5–6 is the range for the entire serpentine mineral group, not measured data for Xiu Yu / Serpentine itself. The whole-class features of chemical composition, long-wave UV fluorescence, short-wave UV fluorescence, UV-visible spectrum, infrared spectrum and magnification are written for the serpentine mineral group as a whole; see the material facts on the Serpentine entry.

Each row carries its own source and check date and can be cited on its own; “—” means the cited source gives no value, not “none”.

Chemical composition, long-wave UV luminescence, short-wave UV luminescence, UV-visible spectrum, infrared spectrum, magnification: these whole-class features are given in the cited clause for serpentine (whole group), so they are not repeated on the Xiu Yu / Serpentine page; see the material facts on the Serpentine entry.

Who maintains this page

The material facts in the Xiu Yu / Serpentine entry are maintained by the LumaLark wiki and matched one by one to the standard clauses or institutional sources they cite: every fact carries its source (with a clause or page locator) and a check date, so it can be traced back to the original. The entry exists so that buyers and sellers can check naming, disclosure and material facts item by item.
